I want to enter special characters but the text toolbar doesn't show up when I enter text edit mode. Please help!

The bar is probably below the bottom of the screen. If you see a solid box next to the X to close the MuseScore window, then click that box to maximize MuseScore. If you see what looks lake two boxes, one on top of the other then click that button and move your mouse to the top of the window. It will turn into a two direction arrow. Click and drag the top of the window down, then drag it by the title bar until you see the bottom of the MuseScore window. As an alternative, if the task bar is locked at the bottom of the screen, you can either move it or set it to auto hide so it will not cover the bottom of the MuseScore window.

This is all for windows, and I'm guessing Mac and Linux have similar options.

Could also be you are in a chord symbol, the text toolbar is disabled for those. You shouldn't need special characters there - the ones actually supported like flat and sharp you can enter via regular keys like "b" and "#". But if you have some unusual special need to put a special character in a chord symbol, you can access the special characters window by pressing F2 any time you are in text edit mode.
