I'm confused as to how you install soundfonts
So, I've downloaded and decompressed an sf2 soundfont, but when I go to the synthesizer and try to implement it it doesn't show up. Am I doing something wrong?

Look in Edit->Preferences and see which directory soundfonts are supposed to be stored and make sure the the soundfonts are there.
Also not that MuseScore reads sf2 files directly; no need to decompress them further.
