MIDI Does not work on Linux / Ubuntu
Hi,
I am running Musescore 3.2.3 on Ubuntu 19.
I have an AKAI LPK 25 keyboard. When I use Bitwig, all I have to do is plug it in and it works (zero configuration).
I have been trying for a week to get this to work with Musescore and it doesn't work.
In I/O settings I have tried:
- ALSA Audio (default) - Does not work. MIDI DIN symbol disabled light blue
- PortAudio -Not a single option appears in drop down menus, Musescore crashes if press okay
- PulseAudio - The MIDI DIN Symbol can be enabled / disabled but no input is seen
- Jack Audio Server - The MIDI DIN Symbol can be enabled /disabled but no input is seen
- Jack Audio Server (and disable "use Jack MIDI") - Musescore crashes
This, in addition to the advice "plug in your midi keyboard before starting Musescore", makes a bad user experience.
As I said, on Bitwig, I plug it in and it just works. There are no functioning options for me on Musescore.
Additionally, every other MIDI input musical software I have used has an indicator (visual) when MIDI notes are incoming / outgoing. This is because a MIDI note is not an audio signal so it can be helpful to see it.
Also, as a user, I don't really care what audio server I am using - I just want my MIDI keybaord to work. How can I troubleshoot this?

Is the MIDI functional on Linux? It does not look like it.

Others use it, so it can work. Unfortunately I don't really have any insight into the specifics of Linux device drivers and what not.
In the configuration(s) where you have a functioning MIDI icon - you say it doesn't work, but can you be more specific? What exactly are you trying - entering notes in step-time note input mode, and nothing appears? Or something else?

It's really just the pulseaudio setting that allows the MIDI icon to be enabled at all.
And yes, I enter note input mode and then press a key on my midi keyboard but nothing at all happens.
This is one reason why having a MIDI IN Indicator (like DAWs) would be a good feature to have.
yeah, i'm having the same issue over here, except it's my playback that won't work. I've heard that portaudio -> built-in output works well, but I have the same issue with the drop-down menus
I'm having the exact same issue. Did anyone find a solution for this?

I have this problem on one of my two Linux computers, but not on the other. I'm tracking down every lead right now. I'm running Ubuntu Mate 20.04 on both computers. It works fine on my eight year old Dell Inspiron but not on my 9 year old HP EliteBook. In fact, when I switch from Pulse Audio to Port Audio ( necessary first step before choosing the keyboard on the drop-down menu), it crashes when I press Apply or Okay. (I've tried it both ways.)

my solution ( on ubuntu 20-04) :
install musescore3 with "synaptic" or with a terminal: sudo apt-get install musescore3
Then run it in a terminal : $ musescore3 -a alsa (forcing use of alsa)
I can now enter notes with my midi keyboard ( not real-time)
changing duration manually....

Any reason you can't run the up-to-date AppImage with that argument instead?
