It seems that the spacing parameter (1=tight) does not respond to any value greater than 2. When I set it to 4 I get the same picture as with 2.

That shouldn't be true in general, I just tried in on a score and it worked as expected. Could be something else going on with your particular score, we'd need you to attach it to understand and assist better.
