Pedal tones without adding new systems
How can I add a pedal tone to a part of my music without adding a new system completely? I want some of the soprano to hold a DO while the rest sing other words. How can I write that? I don't want to add a second part just for 3 measures.

Also, just to clarify some terminology: you probably really meant you didn't want to add a new "staff. A system is the whole group of parallel staves, so new systems are added automatically as you add measures.
