An alternate way to enter dotted notes

• Feb 23, 2020 - 13:40

Hi!
Currently, in note input mode with a specific note value selected, when its icon is clicked or its corresponding shortcut is pressed, nothing happens.

I suggest that same action which now does nothing would cycle between dotted note values and not dotted note values (if you press 5, that's a quarter note, if you pressed it again, a dotted quarter note, and if you pressed it once more, it would go back to a quarter note).

I think this feature would be very well received by users of MIDI keyboards, who would be able to assign the pad/button they use for dots to another shortcut, increasing their workflow efficiency.

Kind regards

What do you mean by when its icon is clicked or its corresponding shortcut is pressed, nothing happens?
The correspoining icons (note duration and dot) become highlighted and the next note entered does get that duration.
Also your proposal misses double dotted notes and also tripple and quadruple dottet ones

I mean that, for example, if I have quavers selected, when I press 5, the selection will change to crochets, but if I press 5 again the selection will continue in crochets, so that shortcut is "momentaneously useless", meaning that it will do nothing when you press it more than one time in a row.

It's true that this suggestion misses the other types of augmentation dots, but as they are far more unusual, musescore doesn't either provide native shortcuts.
Anyway, the proposal could be made wider (but I assume that would require more time of coding) to add a setting in which you could adjust the number of dots per cycle
For example,
range of 0 (the way musescore performs currently): press 5 once, get crochet but no dots, press 5 another time, continue getting crochet but no dots.
range of 1 (the original suggestion I had): press 5 once, get crochet but not dots, press 5 another time and get one dot, press 5 a third time and go back to no dots.
range of 2: press 5 once, get crocht but not dots, press 5 another time and get one dot, press 5 a third time and get a double dot, press 5 a fourth time and go back to no dots.
etc.

Yes, I know, but MIDI keyboard users have a limited number of pads/buttons to assign to shortcuts.
If, for example, you had 8 pads, and you wanted to have all the dot options (simple, double...) assigned, that would mean that you would be left with only four pads for note durations, articulations, etc. That's not feasible.

If, instead, pressing the note value more than once would cycle between dot types, you would have your eight pads available for note durations and articulations, which would save you a lot of time as you wouldn't have to switch from the MIDI keyboard to the regular keyboard so often.

Why have separate on and off buttons when you can have a single on-off toggle button?
