Lost Sound

• Mar 3, 2020 - 18:59

This morning sound won't play. Sound buttons are greyed out. I tried suggestions from the web including going to preferences and I/O and clicking restart Audio and Midi devices, but no luck. So I downloaded the program and re-installed, but still have the same issue. Sound does work on everything else. I have a Mac and haven't updated system or anything lately. I could possibly have trashed my sound file when cleaning other things. I don't think so, but it's possible. If so, I thought a re-install would fix it, but it didn't. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thank you. I have tried all those things. The synthesizer and mixer are greyed out. I did dowload neew sound font collection but that didn't do anything (unless it won't install in the right place). As I said, I downloaded and reinstalled the program but it is still the same.

Actually, I still have issues but I guess it's mac related and I'll fuss with it on my own. The sound did come back like I said, but it won't play through my sound system, only the tinny mac speaker. I tried reselecting my output preferences which changed nothing (other audio playes through my sound system), so in Musescore preferences I clicked "restart audio and midi devices" and lost the sound and the icons greyed out again - back to silence. When I solve this I'll post the solution. Might be a problem just specific to me.

It's getting stranger. I tried toggling the midi button and that makes the sound go off and it won't come back, although the controlls are not greyed out. Also, when I did have the sound playing through my mac speaker the audio was a few seconds behind the playback showing on my screen.

UCA 202 card. Don't think there is a driver. All other sound works correctly on my mac. I decided to do a complete uninstall of musescore which would delete all associated preferences and files. Then I installed the program once again. Same issues. Very baffling. I would be willing to accept the tinny sound from my mac speaker but the 1.5 second delay or so makes it hard to use.

Stumped.

USB audio codec is all I find. Is that a driver? Works for everything else. I don't see UCA in preferences I/O. I don't see much there - API, Device, Midi Input, Midi Oupt etc all greyed out. The only button that works is Restart Audio Midi Devices, and that makes the tinny out of sync sound I sometimes got sound I have go away until I restart my comupter.

Basically, since I rely quite a bit on the audio I can't use the program anymore until I fix this. Been using it happily for years.

It's been a while, but on your Mac you should be able to go somewhere like Finder/ System preferences/ Audio. Your UCA should be listed as out put. This usually happens automatically, sometimes not. I believe that if everything in MuseScore is grayed out, that means it can't find your UCA. Otherwise it would be listed in API and Device.

I am thinking (partly from reading other posts) that this might have to do with my sound font file. I may have accidentally removed my sound font file last week. If so, it seems like reinstalling the program would solve it but it hasn't. Where should the sound file be located, and what is the most standard one to have? Is there a way to make Musescore find the sound font file?

I downloaded the standard file which did not seem to be in my soundfont folder. I can't follow the install instructions because when I open the musescore program the synthesizer is still greyed out, and one instruction told me to go there. I tried manually putting the downloaded file into my existing soundfont folder and closed then reopened the program, but nothing has changed yet.

SOLVED? Cautiously optimistic... Shut down Mac and restarted while holding down key to reset PRAM again. But this time tried using my old Mac keyboard because I remembered that sometimes startup key combinations for Mac do not seem to work on after market keyboards (I've been using a MaCally keyboard). Before doing that I had trashed the program and gone into my libraries to again remove any trace of the program. After resetting PRAM I downloaded fresh program again, and so far it's working.

After several days the program seems stable. For anybody having a similar issue I will add that the last thing I did was rearrange my USB cables so my external sound card went directly into my computer USB port rather than my powered USB port hub.
