I like working with the "navigator" on the side. But it does not appear by default, and each time I need to open it.
I would like to be able to choose in the preferences if I want this to be shown or not, so that I can control the default.

You can have it shown by default if set so in Edit > Preferences > General > Program Start > Show navigator
