repeats with midi export

• Jul 23, 2020 - 16:49

Whenever I want to export some sheet music in the midi format all my repeats disappear. Well, they actually get converted into how you really play the notes. So in other words, if there are two measure with the repeat signs, the signs disappear and instead I get 4 measures. This is not really dramatical but that's not what I want.
If I use the MuseScore file type .mscz for the same sheet music the measures are stored untouched.
Is this a bug or a feature? Is there something I can do to preserve the repeat signs when exporting as midi-file?

So when I write a piece of music and export it, I can just decide whether the repeats shall be unrolled or not.
If I import the Midi-file again it will never contain any repeats, right.

Then the default setting "expand" makes sense again, Thanks.

Does MXL do a better job there? Can it also store text which Midi doesn't support I guess?

I chose Midi in the first place since it is very versatile and wide spread unlike the mscz-format.

MSCZ is the only format that will record everything you do in MuseScore. But it's true other programs won't understand it. What other programs are you expecting to use? MusicXML is certainly far better than MIDI, and it tries to be like a universal language that you can translate anything into, but as with all translations, it's not perfect. Try using Google Translate to translate a paragraph of text from English to French and back, and see how closely it resembles the original. Probably at least recognizable, but with lots of subtle changes and errors along the way.

So by all means, feel free to export to MusicXML and other programs will be able to get the gist of your music, but don't think of these as a substitute for MSCZ - they aren't. They are just a way to facilitate communication between programs whose native languages are different. But each program will work best with files in its native language.
