Instrument Demo Score?

• Sep 23, 2020 - 00:19

So I threw together a file with a bunch of different synths in it as different instruments with a few measures of somewhat random notes... I was wondering if maybe there was a better way to demo the instruments available in the program? Or perhaps someone has already put together a score with demos of all the different instruments?

I looked through the help file and searched online but didn't find anything. But there are many times my Google-fu is very poor! :)

Thanks!

It may have never been done because not everyone uses the same sound font. There are several possible. Many use the default, but not everyone. I use a mixture.

Just be aware that playback sound is not the same as written instrument. By default MuseScore tries to use the closest matching GeneralMIDI patch for an instrument. There are more instruments than in the General MIDI standard and in the default soundfont for MuseScore; so many instruments use a fallback sound by default.

You are of course free to add any other soundfont to MuseScore to have it use different playback sounds for different instruments. (See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfonts-and-sfz-files )

Given that playback sound is pretty much decoupled from the chosen instrument (drums being the exception to that rule), you can just notate a single line of music, turn on loop playback and "live" switch sounds in the mixer until you found one you were looking for.
Then change the instrument to the one matching that sound as to get the correct transposition behavior within MuseScore.

I was wondering if something like that was possible. Outstanding suggestion; I'll give it a try. Thanks!
