No playback ability in Musescore 3

the playback controls are greyed out on the menu bar above and there is no ability to show under the 'view' tab. All of 'synthesizer', 'playback' controls and 'mixer' under the 'view' tab are greyed out and not operable. I have downloaded soundfonts but I am unable to install them. can anyone help.
