Voltas not working right

• Oct 13, 2020 - 02:32

This score has two pairs of volta brackets. In the latter first ending, playback is supposed to repeat back to the beginning, where the first pair of volta brackets will once more apply, then play to the end, at the second ending. You might say I have two pair of volta brackets, one pair "nested" within the other. I am in page view, and I toggled the repeat button a few times, as advised. I think the notation is correct. The first pair of volta brackets works correctly. However, the latter first ending is disregarded. Playback skips to the latter second ending, then stops. I've attached the score. Please advise.

You cannot nest repeats. Since you have an end repeat there is no place for the second end repeat to go to, it will not go to the first repeat. You must have a start repeat after the first 2nd volta. If your intention is to go back to the beginning of the song from the end, then use a D.C. type command. If you need the second volta, use a D.C. al Coda and put the to coda at the measure before your current volta and the coda where the second volta is. You will then have the option on the D.C. al Coda to play repeats or not in the first half of the song, set this in the inspector. One more thing, the start repeat is optional since the repeat goes to the start of the song.

Thanks, Mike.

I think I understand. I just want to clarify one detail. As far as I know, nested voltas are okay in musical notation. True? Actually, I have the original non-MuseScore printed score in hand. The voltas and barlines are the same as in my MuseScore digital score, unless I made a dumb mistake.

Do you mean to say nested volta brackets just don't work right in MuseScore? Or am I making a more fundamental error?

By the way, does the documentation say somewhere that nested volta brackets don't work in MuseScore? (I tried to RTFI, didn't see that bit.) If not, should it?

This is a fundamental mistake. Nested voltas are non-sensical in music. They are open to interpretation and cause confusion among musicians/singers. With the lyrics you have in the score this would make the most sense. I'm not familiar with that song.

I looked at a couple of version of this online and the first repeat actually has the notes written out. See https://imslp.org/wiki/Zigeunerlieder%2C_Op.103_(Brahms%2C_Johannes)
