Cannot open Musescore 3 after dowloading new version

I've used Musescore for several years. Today downloaded the latest version as per instructions. When I try to open, the blue Musescope popup appears followed by a small popup saying "The previous session closed unexpectedly. Do you want to restore" If I click YES, the opening page appears but without the staves, then closes after about 2 seconds. If I click NO, the opening page appears this time with staves and the word TITLE, but it also closes after 2 secs. The popup showing recent music / start new piece never appears. I'm using HP laptop.
