When an object is selected and its y property appears in the inspector:

  • the up arrow moves the object down the screen rather than up the screen
  • the down arrow moves the object up the screen rather than down the screen

It's understood that this occurs because y represents screen coordinates rather than Cartesian plane. However the effect is surely counter-intuitive to the average user, there is an easy fix expressed here, and a complete consensus for this change among those commenting in the discussion.

But wait...there's more!
The keyboard up arrow can move an object up or down. (Yes, you read it correctly.)

For instance:
1. Open a score and click on a whole measure rest, then press the keyboard up arrow a few times and observe the rest.
2. Next, click anywhere in the Y offset box in the Inspector, then press the keyboard up arrow a few times and observe the rest.
That very same keyboard arrow!!... Principle of most astonishment in action here (in a WYSIWYG sort of way).

I know, I know... someone's gonna say "Yeah, but watch the Inspector's Y offset box... those numbers go up... yada... yada... number line.... coordinates in the 4th quadrant... blah... blah.... negative numbers... zzzzz... ;-)
