Unable to open MSCZ, Files?

• Nov 13, 2020 - 21:45

Hello! Thank you very much for taking the time to look at my question.

Earlier this year, my computer of about 4 years running completely died out and I was unable to operate on it. I ended up purchasing a new Dell shortly afterward and went to a few tech stores to do some data transfers from my old laptop to my new one. I have many files from the old Musescore...ones that I started composing in versions of MuseScore 1 and 2. I automatically downloaded Musescore 3 on my new laptop, but am unable to open any of my old scores. I get this load error message when trying to open one of my arranged pieces ("Homeward Bound"):
"Cannot read file C:\Users\linma\AppData\Local\Temp\Temp1_Scores.zip.Homeward_Bound.mscz,:
unknown type"
I tried to download older versions of Musescore but still cannot open them.

Please let me know what you know. I really need to get into some of these older scores!!! Thank you for your help! :)

That's not a real score, it's your backup, meaning it's not the last saved version but the previous saved saved.
You can open it if you rename it to remove the ",". But, better to just keep looking until you find the real score, which won't start with a period or end in a comma. And actually, that whole folder you are looking in is not where your scores would normally be saved, that's would happen only for scores recovered from a crash. Be sure to look in your normal scores folder.
