Note tie ignored
have two occasions in a piece where on playback the tied note E is ignored across bars, have a number of other ties in the piece that play correctly. Have tried deleting the tie and re entering but is still ignored in playback

The slur does play, but the chord symbol too, A Major

What Jojo-Schmitz was explaining is that the ties are working as expected. If you silence the chord playback, you can hear this clearly.
Open the Mixer (F10) and click on the Show channels right-facing arrow. You will then see two channels, and you can mute the one on the right (Pno.-harm):

Or just disable playbackl for that chord symbol via Inspector, or for all, by using Set to Style in Inspector. See also https://musescore.org/en/faq#faq-308797
