Copying and inserting bars
Is it possible to paste bars from another section or piece into my piece without having to manually insert (at least the right number of) empty bars ready for the copy?

Not at the moment. There is a suggestion in the issue tracker requesting this at #165746: Request option to copy system elements with copy/paste (ALL ELEMENTS). It's a long discussion but this should be included it the capability ever gets added.
I do wish this could be implemented. I am writing a set of variations, and experimenting with having the variations in different sequences. The option to select a series of bars, Copy or Move, then Paste to a different place in the score would be such a time-saver. Just as you would do in Word, with no need to allocate space first.
Hello are there any plans to introduce this facility yet? - it is such an obvious feature to have.
