Small notes above the stave
Dear Muse Score Clever People,
We have recently moved over to MuseScore for our school composition work and find it a great resource.
I am using it increasingly in blended/distance learning in aural tasks and dictation.
I would like to know how to add small rhythmic notation above the stave as an aid to students, when pitch is the main answer for the student to input.

That should definitely be a good starting point. That feature was designed for a different purpose and might not by default look exactly as you want, but probably it can be adapted if you describe how you'd want it different. For example, to move it higher above the staff, see the "fix to line" and/or the "chord offset" in the Inspector.
