QUICK QUESTION: 4.0 Sound Font Functionality

• Jan 25, 2021 - 20:44

Hi Marc -
I have a very brief question about the intended functionality of 4.0. Which is the correct page within which to ask it? - Gary

The forums, probably Development & Technology Preview.

QUESTION: I write exclusively on Staff paper (or Musescore). I will likely never use anything like Ableton. In light of the understandable limitations of the native Musescore sound fonts, I am hoping that Musescore 4.0 will allow plug-ins for commercial Orchestral Sound Fonts, or the ability to somehow utilize them. Bowing nuances are chief among the many articulations that I am needing. Does anyone know if this functionality is intended? And what the current Beta delivery calendar looks like? - Many Thanks in advance

This is exactly the sort of thing being discussed - see for instance the pretty detailed post explaining what we are trying to achieve - https://musescore.org/en/MuseScore4

As for schedule, about the only thing one can say is the hope is to release sometime this year. It's nowhere near ready for beta yet, though, not even close.

Hey Marc - Hope all is well. 14 months now since I posted this. I would have thought we were getting close to 4.0 with at-home coding collaborations (due to Covid).
Is the 4.0 Beta moving along?
The native soundfonts offer a lot. So much so that the playback limitations are excruciating.
The ability to amend voices, e.g. bowing nuances such as tremolo, slur, etc., would be miraculous .
My background tells me the coding techniques are not prohibitively complex.
RSVP.
Thank You.

I’m not really the one to ask; I haven’t been actively involved in coding for a while. Just keep checking the Announcements forum for official updates, including several about playback specifically. As you’ll see from the posts there, we are getting close to an Alpha release, Beta would be sometime after that.
