Chord
With my latest update, MuseScore 3.?, on playback, at any chord symbol the entire chord gets played even if there are no notes in the score. How do I turn this 'feature' off so that i can use the chord symbols as markers, bet hear only the notes written on the staff?

Untick chord symbol playback in format->style...->chord symbols, see also: https://musescore.org/de/faq#faq-308797.
When you say "markers", though, do you mean you are trying to use them as rehearsal marks? Don't do that, use the built-in rehearsal mark facility instead (Ctrl+M). Otherwise bad things will happen when you tranpose, export to MusicXML, etc.
That ? got to be 5 or greater. Chord symbols playback is a new feature since 3.5. See the handbook on how to turn it off
