Musescore 3.6 crashing

• Feb 7, 2021 - 15:11

I just updated from 3.4 to 3.6. Every time I try to start Musescore I get an error message saying that a problem has caused Musescore 3 to stop working, and forces me to close the program. No other information given. Any ideas?

3.6.1 Installation crashing.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit.

I am not a regular user of MuseScore 3. I have it installed so that other people can send me MuseScore files. My downloads folder shows the version I was running was 3.0.5-x86_64.

I recently opened MuseScore 3 and it prompted me to download and install an update. The version downloaded was 3.6.1.515740707-x86_64.

I ran this update and after starting installation, the following message appeared:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘MuseScore-3.2.3x86_64.msi’ in the box below.

The box has a “browse” feature, and after various attempts I concluded that this file was not on my computer. Clicking OK caused the installation to terminate. A fresh download and a further attempt to install had the same result.

I decided to uninstall MuseScore 3 and attempt a fresh installation. This had the same result as before and the installation terminated. My list of installed programs no longer showed MuseScore3.

I tried to reinstall the older version 3.0.5 but this failed, with a message saying that a newer version is installed on my computer (even though it had been uninstalled). The installation program, as it exited, showed a message saying:

The older version of MuseScore3 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

Eventually I found a historic download for version 3.2.3x86_64.msi on the website. I attempted a further install of the newest (3.6.1 etc) download, and when prompted to find a folder containing 3.2.3x86_64.msi (see above) I did so but with the same outcome as before.

I found a residual folder for MuseScore3 in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software and removed it. A registry cleaner found a couple of other links and removed them.

This has had no effect and any attempt to install still gets the message that the older version of MuseScore3 cannot be removed. Online advice about factory reset doesn’t help because there is no path to MuseScore3 on my computer.

An attempt at System Restore has not helped either.

So now I cannot install the current version, I cannot install the older version, the program has been uninstalled and the registry folder removed, but the installation package insists that an older version remains on my computer. I now have no access whatsoever to MuseScore3.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit.
Note that Windoes 7 is no longer supported (and since more than a year now), by Microsoft
The free update to Windows 10 is still possible.

I recently opened MuseScore 3 and it prompted me to download and install an update. The version downloaded was 3.6.1.515740707-x86_64.
Huh? That version is has not been enabled for autoupate, only 3.6.0 has, so far.

See that FAQ and follow the steps there. At least you should have instead of creating a mess as you apparently meanwhile did. It seems more more registry magic is needed to make Windows forget that MuseScore was ever installed.

Thanks for the prompt response, but I don't really need advice about updating to Windows 10. MuseScore 3 was working fine under Windows 7 until I downloaded the update.

If version 3.6.1.515 etc etc has not been "enabled", why did MuseScore 3 prompt me to download it when I opened it up?

I had already looked at FAQ before posting this query and there appear to be no topics there that deal with this problem, except "How do I report something?", which is precisely what I have done.

And, frankly, the "mess" was not created by me and I resent the suggestion. The "mess" was created
when I tried to install version 3.6.1.515 and it failed repeatedly. Why did the reinstall ask me to find 3.2.3x86_64.msi when that version has never been installed on my machine (although it is still available to download)? See attached screenshot. Musescore screenshot 1.doc Musescore screenshot 1.doc Why did MuseScore3 leave hidden traces when I uninstalled it? And why do these hidden traces not allow the reinstallation of the older version? Perhaps the "mess" was created by whoever at MuseScore3 put out the prompt to install version 3.6.1.515.

Of course none of these questions help me reinstall a working version of MuseScore3.

It's clear that "more registry magic" is needed to clear out the remaining elements of MuseScore3. That's why I posted this query. Can anyone tell me the location of other registry keys relating to MuseScore3 and how to delete or edit them to achieve a complete removal?

I found a residual folder for MuseScore3 in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software and removed it. A registry cleaner found a couple of other links and removed them.

This is what I mean with 'mess you created'

If MuseScore's Installer's error talks about 3.2.3, I'd tend to believe it, i.e. 3.2.3 had been installed at some point, the installer surely isn't dreaming that up out of the blue, there got to be some place on your computer what that had been stores, likely the registry

And when 3.0 got released in December 2019, Windows 7 was still supported (by Microsoft). As of January 2020 it is no longer (onla Windoes 8.1 and 10 are supported, by Microsoft).
If MuseScore still works, fine (and it did up to December 2020, which is when I finaly bit the bullit and updated to Windows 10).

With FAQ I meant the one I mentioned further up

BTW: no reason to attach a doc here that contains nothing but an image, you can attach that here directly and even inline:

Thanks again for your response.
I’m not sure why your link to an FAQ relating to crash on startup should help with a failed install.

The FAQ lists the following:
1. Either reboot your PC or kill QWebEngineProcess (using Windows taskmanager):
- The machine has been rebooted many times since this issue appeared. QWebEngineProcess (orQtWebEngineProcess) is not listed as a process in Windows taskmanager

2.Reinstall (without starting MuseScore!), if offered take the 'Repair' option
Finally fixed with 3.6.2
- Reinstall is precisely what I am trying to do, and MuseScore is preventing that happening. And it appears that version 3.6.2 is not yet available to fix anything.

  1. For 3.6(.0) .........
Best fix here: update to 3.6.1 or later (taken from the download page if resp. as long as not offered by MuseScore automatically), but see also above.

- Of course, it is a version of 3.6.1 which has failed to install and has apparently prevented a return to my earlier version.

  1. If none of the above helps, revert to factory settings via command line.

- This isn’t possible because MuseScore3 has been uninstalled and there is no folder/directory for MuseScore 3 remaining on my machine.

I only resorted to modifying the registry after uninstalling MuseScore3 and making several further attempts to reinstall it, all of which ended with the message
“The older version of MuseScore3 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.”

I am quite clear that a “proper” uninstall should have removed the MuseScore3 folder from the Registry. (I should be clear that the uninstall was carried out “officially” using Programs and Features in the Windows Control Panel. Programs and Features no longer shows MuseScore3). All the error messages I previously mentioned continued to appear after I had uninstalled MuseScore3 and while that folder still remained in the registry.

Finally, you say “If MuseScore's Installer's error talks about 3.2.3, I'd tend to believe it, i.e. 3.2.3 had been installed at some point, the installer surely isn't dreaming that up out of the blue, there got to be some place on your computer what that had been stores, likely the registry”, but all previously downloaded versions remain in my download directory, and 3.2.3 wasn’t there until I downloaded it after it appeared in the dialogue box during the attempt to install 3.6.1.

The point about this is that it’s all history, and rather pointless tit-for-tat. What I would really like is for my “technical support group” to tell me how to clear the remnants of MuseScore 3 out of my registry so that a fresh install can happen.

And of course the main obstacle appears to be registry items that (a) identify version 3.6.1as still being installed, even when MuseScore has been uninstalled, and (b) use this feature to prohibit the re-installation of an older version.

Thanks

It is the Techical Support Group for that Installer (it is its messages, not MuseScore's) or for Microsoft, not for MuseScore.
Search the entire registry for MuseScore. Delete the directorories MuseScore stores its settings and preferences (see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/revert-factory-settings#instruction… for some details)

Sorry, but if nothing what you have been told here already helps, I am running out of further ideas.

Thank for these, which are more helpful. I found more Musescore3 stuff in my AppData files and deleted them. But still no success with the install.
I'm not sure I'm skilled enough to use the code to find any more stuff in the registry, but I'll give it a try.
Incidentally, I found version 3.6.2 on the downloads page, but trying to install it has the same outcome as 3.6.1.
