Changing notation

• Feb 21, 2021 - 02:39

Hi. I am writing a chart in Musescore with a 5/8 time signature.
The notation changes from groupings of 3 + 2 and then 2 + 3 in some bars.
I cant work out how to change the notation bar by bar.
If I right click on the time signature and change the notation, it changes the whole instruments part. It seems to think it is a global change, not a bar by bar change which is what I need.
Any ideas.

Hello,
I would set the 5/8 time signature up for the grouping I use most, 3 + 2 in your case. Then when I want to beam a bar a different way (2 + 3 in your case), I go to Palettes > Beam Properties and re-beam by dragging and dropping that "first sixteenth of a tuplet" icon over the 3rd eighth note in the bar.

If one grouping is much more common than the other then set up the time signature that way. If it's more random then set it up to beam all 5 notes together. Look in Edit >Preferences >Shortcuts and see if you have a shortcut for Beam Start - if not, create one. Now you can skip through the score using the → key and press your shortcut wherever you want to split the beaming. You might also want to set a Beam Middle shortcut which joins the beaming together.
