File Gone

• Feb 23, 2021 - 02:39

Hi, I wrote this 12 minute long song and when I open musescore and go to the start center it isn't there, and when I go to file open only half of it is there, I saved it every minute so I know it was saved it's just not showing up anywhere. Does anyone know what could have happened? Thanks.

If you saved the file, it is absolutely positively there, exactly in the same folder and with the same name as when you last saved it. MuseScore never under any circumstances moves or removes your files. So the only question is, exactly which folder did you actually save to, and under what name. Apparently, not the same as what you are trying now. A full search of your computer would probably turn it up (use the facilities provided by your OS to find all MSCZ, including in hidden or system folders). But also, just really thinking through and retracing your steps about which folder you believe it to be could help.

One possibility, for example, is that your computer, or MuseScore, crashed at some point while working on this, and MuseScore offered to restore your previous sessions, and you agreed, but the recovered file was never properly saved before another crash happened, and then you needed to recover again. In that case, you'd now be working on a copy of the autosaved file, in the autosave folder. A clue to that would be the filename would have changed to something like scn36737 instead of what it should have been. See https://musescore.org/en/node/52116 for info on the autosave folder.

See the article I linked, it shows exactly where those autosave files for various different operating systems.

In the future,. know that files with that name are not your real score - any time you see that name, always be sure to do a Save As and save to your actual scores folder. That file is an autosave file, hidden in the autosave folder. normally you'd never see that unless there was an unfortunate series of multiple crashes with no saves in between. So also, any time you recover after a crash, be sure to save, to lock in the file in the correct location.
