Pizzicato triplet playback issue

• Mar 24, 2021 - 11:23

The attached score has an odd playback issue: When either the full score or the Vln1 and Vln2 parts are played together, there are extra notes added to the Vln1 part. A few things that I've tried:

• It is only when the Vln1 part is pizzicato. Keep the part arco, and the rhythms and notes play correctly.
• It is only when both the Vln1 and Vln2 parts are playing. Every other way I've tried to isolate the parts—Vln1 + Vla and/or Vc—results in the Vln1 part played correctly.

Any insight or suggestions?

So, we're talking about one note and one note only, the F on beat three in measure 6?

It comes in exactly on the beat for the instruments with no grace notes, but a little after the beat for the notes with grace notes. That's normal. MuseScore uses one of the three standard conventions for grace notes, where the grace note is played on the beat, the main note later.

So you're hearing one violing play on the beat, the other later.

No, I was just using that measure as an example. I'm now realizing that the "extra notes" I've been hearing are the result of the Vln2 part hitting the F later than the beat. It was conflicting with the Vln1 part in a way that was really throwing me off, so much so that I thought extra notes were being added to the Vln1 part.

So my issue isn't that something is wrong with the playback per se; it's that the grace note convention MuseScore is using isn't reflecting the way I want the music to sound. I'm used to grace notes without a slash being played on the beat, while grace notes with a slash are often played before the beat. Is there a way of changing the convention that MuseScore uses, or is it simply as-is?

There is no current way to change the playback of grace notes to be before the beat, except perhaps by editing things in the Piano Roll Editor. Having more control over these playback details is a common request and hopefully the sort of thing the planned "sequencer mode" for MuseScore 4 would address better.
