Hairpin won't adjust

• Apr 10, 2021 - 16:25

Hi, I might be missing something really obvious, but one of my hairpins won't adjust. It insists on overlapping the next bar, and if I try to drag the pink box, it just won't drag. Other hairpins in the same piece also overlapped the bar line, but did then adjust. I've tried deleting it and putting it back.

Many thanks

This is easy to reproduce. I think it is because of the end-start repeat barline. If I choose the dotted half and the notes to the left of it, then add the hairpin, the right end of the hairpin goes through the end-start repeat barline. Just as in the image. I was able to drag it slightly to the left so that it looked right. But then the right end pink dot attached to the second note in the next measure. I don't know if the dynamic mark on the first beat is then ignored.
There doesn't seem to be a problem if a normal barline is there, instead.

It's not wrong for the hairpin to go through the repeat barline, after all, it went through two other barline already. The rule being followed here is, if the note & dynamic marking the end of the hairpin is "close" to the barline, we stop the hairpin short of the barline. If it's "far away" (because of a time signature, key signature, clef, or in this case, because the barline itself is so wide), then it's common practice to extend the barline.

Normally this all works well but this does indeed seem a case where the algorithm is a little too eager. You can workaround it here by disabling autoplace for either the hairpin or the dynamic.
