Repeat chord sound on playback

• Apr 23, 2021 - 20:39

Is it possible to set each chord symbol playback on the beats indicated by the time signature to give a vamp effect such as a pianist or rhythm guitar player might use as accompaniment ? - the only way I can see is to manually repeat each chord symbol, which is a time-consuming and tedious task, especially on a large score.

It's not current possible, but it's not all that hard to do manually, either, if you use the "R" command to repeat the selection. If you attach your score as it is, we can help guide you through the process.

  1. Click on the first chord (C in measure 1)
  2. Shift+Click on the last chord in the range (C in measure 31)
All inbetween chords are now selected
  3. Ctrl+C (Cmd-C on Mac) to copy them
  4. Click on the first note of measure 33
  5. Ctrl+V (Cmd-V on Mac) to paste them

That is not quite what I am looking for.
I want to repeat each chord on the main beats of each bar until the chord changes and so on throughout the piece, to give a "vamp" accompaniment for the benefit of the singers when learning or practising the piece, as the example below. At the moment , I can only accomplish this by painstakingly adding the chords one by one.

Sorry, I had missed the original question.

Adding in the chords on each beat took me about 2mins on your score; by using the "next beat" shortcut key during chord entry. Once entered I clicked the first chord symbol, shift clicked the last and marked them invisible; then turned the required ones back visible one by one. That took another 3mins
A plugin could likely be made to "fill" your chords out and mark them invisible; thus automating this process.

>> my long-term wish list for chord playback is for MS to play chords according to a rhythm in slash notation

+ 1

And alternately, play chord according to some simple designation, like:

• in 4/4 — Sound chord on beats 2, 4
• in 3/4 — Sound chord on beats 2, 3

As I said, it's not that hard using the "repeat selection" command ("R" shortcut). Add a staff, fill with quarter rests, add the chords you want there, then select the first beat of each measure and press "R" three times. Yes, still a bit of work, but the "R" command saves a lot of time and thinking and typing here.

Ditto on my UK QWERTY keyboard. My problem is that I do not understand how to make the R a shortcut and apply it for the current purpose.
I have been using Musescore for 10 years and much appreciate the relatively recent new facility to have chords playing back, so any further guidance you can give me will be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Mac

I'm not understanding your question. You don't have to do anything to make "R" a shortcut. It is predefined for that purpose, has been for years. Select a range in your score, press "R" - that simple. Whatever is selected gets copied and pasted immediately to the right. I guess if you've previously disabled that shortcut in Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts you'd have to redefine it.
