Staggered Bow? (bow with parenthesis)

• Apr 24, 2021 - 08:44

I understand the (V) symbol is not in SMuFL and must be created manually. But I'm having a lot of trouble matching the fonts of the parenthesis AND of the up bow.

  • I figured I would create a regular text element (add>text>staff text), and save that to my custom palette. Is this the best way?

  • What fonts would match MuseScore's default parenthesis, and up/down bows? (Leland does not match)

  • Can this custom text be created in such a way, that it will change fonts automatically? (Say, if I want to make future score with Bravura, or MuseJazz). Or would I need to make a custom text element for each font?

Increase the size of that v to like 18pt? While leaving the parens at 10pt.
It would change along with the Musical (Text) Font, but the size may not match then anymore

Ok this does work, thanks for checking! I think a couple things were going on:

  • I guess a single text element can't have multiple fonts? So I was entering the full "(V)", and trying to change just "V" to Leland.
  • In my program I required an extra step - changing the font from Edwin to Leland had no effect until I pressed " Remove Custom Formatting" in the Inspector. (I thought this may have been from a custom default template, but that's not the case - I tried clearing my default templates, and creating a new file - same result)

So that's how to get the up bow to match. Any idea about the parenthesis? The default for (parenthesis around notes) doesn't seem to match Leland, Leland Text, or Edwin.

A single string can contain multiple fonts, actually that is what the "Remove Custom Formatting" reverts.
Here Edwin vor the parens and the musical font (whichever that is) for the V

<font size="10" face="Edwin"/>(<font size="18" face="ScoreText"/><sym>stringsUpBow</sym><font size="10" font face="Edwin"/>)

"ScoreText" is a placehoder and changes along with the Musical Text Font setting of a score

I seem to have a vague memory of staggered bowing looking more like this.

Could be wrong.
This is not hard to make, but I have no idea how to save it to a palette.
FWIW I selected the cello note. Added the up and down symbols. Dragged them to the correct place. Selected the cello note again and hit SHIFT+(. this put ( ) around the note. Dragged them to either side of the bow symbols. At least everything is the proper size?

Yeah, here's what I get when importing. (the 2nd note is an upbow articulation I added, for comparison)

I looked in the text editor, and saw this line

        (stringsUpBow)

Even when I edit that line manually, to "Leland" instead of "ScoreText", the up bow shows up in Edwin font!

Changing Format>Style>Text Styles>Staff to Leland doesn't change the up bow, either.
