Adding rehearsal marks and system text on multiple staves

• Aug 3, 2021 - 16:10

There's been some conversation about how to add rehearsal marks and system text on multiple staves. (It's fairly standard in orchestral scores for rehearsal marks to be both above the top staff and above the string staff.) One possible suggestion is to use the same technique as adding voltas over multiple staves: Hold the Command key (on Mac) or the Control key (on Windows) while adding it where you want it. Until there's a way of doing this globally, this may be something that's worth exploring.

Thanks for your consideration.

Judging by the comment history this issue dates back to at least 2013 and still isn't resolved. I would like to add it to a wish list for development. As far as I understand, staff text applies to one staff and system text applies to all staves but (a) appears on each staff only when parts are generated and (b) appears only on the top staff of the score. Therein lies the problem, as people have said over the years, traditional orchestral scores duplicate system text information over the 1st violins, despite Sabatella saying that "the right way" is only over the top staff. The reason why text is duplicated over the strings is because orchestral scores tend to be very tall and the conductor is probably paying a lot of attention to the string parts, which are at the bottom of the system. So if Finale can handle this for decades, how about Musescore? I'm working on a new piece now (with 10 staves) and I finally updated to version 3 yesterday, but I'm disappointed that I have to make system text for everyone and then the same as staff text on the violins, knowing that when I generate parts the violins will have duplicate text and I must then make the staff text invisible, as you suggested in 2019. I just don't see this as a viable solution—unless I'm missing a new feature which I haven't found yet.

I'm not sure where you are seeing comments from me about the "right way" being top only, but I must have been talking about some other context (like someone trying to reproduce things on all staves, which I have seen people ask about), or maybe I was temporarily confused. Anyhow, yes, absolutely, in orchestral scores, system elements should be reproduced over the strings. The staff text workaround does indeed work, though. MuseScore 4 will have an automatic facility for this, details still being worked out.
