Figured bass placement
There is a gray line that extends out of the top of my figured bass and it seems to have some effect on how the next figured bass is placed. Is there a way to control this so that I do not have to go back and reposition the figures?

Those light gray top lines indicate the duration of your figured bass number.
You can control them by using the desired duration advancement actions when entering figured bass as per the duration paragraph from https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/figured-bass
Generally, the algorithm tries to position and align things well automatically, so you aren't supposed to need to position things manually. There are some known cases where this can fail, however. if you attach a sample score where you are having trouble and describe what alternate arrangement you'd prefer, we can assist further in achieving the result.
