I have a dotted qtr and an 8th together...same bar. How do I make those two qtr notes. When I change the dotted qtr to a qtr, I get a rest that I can't get rid of.

Shorten the dotter quarter. Cut the 8. Past onto that rest.
Or just reenter the two notes: "5 C D" is likely to be as efficient as any other method of attempting to both change the duration and the start time of the notes involved.
