User friendly vertical stacking order

• Sep 29, 2021 - 14:41

Are there or have there been any plans to make stacking order more user friendly to be not so time-consuming for certain instances? for example, making use of two different text elements with a line requires 3 vertical "stacks", and these can't be manipulated quickly or cycled through in MuseScore. You'd think this would be some finesse based programming that would be in high demand but I haven't seen much talk about it.

As an example:

If it is desired to have that line be below those two text elements, the only way I've found so far is disabling automatic placement and then making use of keyboard or using the mouse to eye-ball the activity.

It would be really nice if there were a vertical stacking cycle function or something to be able to quickly switch around the elements

Generally, autoplace for different types is based on standard engraving conventions; for elements of the same type, it's first come first served. Tough to say much from just pictures, but if you attach an actual score so we can understand what the actual elements involved are, and if you explain in more detail what arrangements you'd prefer, we can understand and assist better.

Ultimately, though, indeed I could see customization of the ordering being an occasionally useful thing.

For the record, the texts in question for me were [figured bass] and then any type of text, e.g., [staff-text] or [expression text] or [chord symbol] or [RNA]. The text line places correctly after figured bass, but there doesn't seem to be any "systematic" way to get a line to be under (to include under) both texts without disabling automatic placement and then performing manual adjustments.

Indeed, that specific case (similar for RNA) requires manual adjustment. So that's one that would be good to someday support more directly without the need for manual adjustments of any kind. For instance, by adding a facility to place the line within the context of the FB or RNA itself. I've though about how that might work for RNA within the Campania font, but don't really have a solution, so it would probably need to be built into MuseScore - and thus would also be usable by the FB facility.

I second this -- when I have multiple Repeat Text Right instructions at the end of a section I have to disable automatic placement and manually specify offsets because otherwise they refuse to stack nicely. stack.jpg

See my reply above: if you simply add them in the desired order, they will stack automatically, no need to resort to disabling autolace or fiddling with manual adjustments.

But also, unless you have somehow triggered these to produce the desired playback effect (which seems like it would not be possible), why not simply make these a single text?
