Adding note beyond bar count
I am copying a piece in 4:4 time but there are bars where an extra 1/4 note is added., giving a theoretical count of 5. How do I do this without carrying over to the next bar? In the score I am using, there are three notes with a small '3' and link line above where this occurs.

That thing with.a 3 above it is a triplet, three notes played in the time of one quarter note. Thus you have only four quarter note beats in the measure. See here for how to enter a triplet https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tuplets#normal-mode.
