I am trying to just get the trombone pieces of a band arrangement but don't see a way, does anyone know how to help?

I assume the trombone has its own stave in the score, in which case you would create a part that just contains the trombone. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/parts for how to go about that.
You can indeed generate just the trombone part, and that Handbook section shows how, but FWIW, it's easier to just generate all parts (same page shows how).
