Distance between systems
Going through format > style > page, the distance between systems can be reduced to the factor of 1.0. Yet in one particular case, this is not enough and I need to reduce it even more (without making the systems themselves smaller). Is there another way?

Whether you are using "Enable vertical justification of staves" or "Disable vertical justification of staves", you need to reduce both these Page properties:
- Min. system distance
- Max. system distance
If that does not give the desired result, then you could also reduce the Scaling:
- Format > Page Settings... > Scaling > Stave space
