Mixing parts with two staves with parts with just one stave in a single MuseScore page

• Jan 10, 2022 - 14:12

I want to have an example - say SATB or piano keyboard, together with a single stave as a separate line on one page in MuseScore. This is for pedagogic purposes - and indeed the single stave doesn't even need bar lines.

How can I do that?

The general approach is to enter the music you want/need and make use of the "hide empty staves" style option to make empty staves disappear.
The additional trick you might need then is a transparent staff text you can add to staves on systems that are otherwise empty but shouldn't hide.

Cutaway might work as well yes.

Though generally speaking, if you're making a document with examples in it; chances are high that you'll have a number of them using either grand or single staff notation. In those cases I'd recommend one of the Hide Empty Staves mechanics over the cutaway option.

For the first part of your question, assuming you mean the single staff part comes before/after the SATB part (as opposed to simultaneously) enter the music, then enable "Hide empty staves" in Format / Style / Score. You can also control whether they are hidden on the first system or not. If you did mean simultaneously, simply add the staff via Edit / Instruments.

For non=metered music, there are a number of ways depending on the specific context, but in general, a technique I often find useful it to estimate how many measures worth I might want, select more than that number of measures, use Tools / Measure / Join Selected Measures, enter the notes, then delete any extra beats using Ctrl+Delete.

If you continue to need help, attach your score and then we can understand assist better.
