Adding rit does not retard. (Turns out there's a plugin, and it works well!!!)
Perhaps I am not doing it properly, but when I drag rit. (from the tempo palette) to the note I would like it to begin on, there is no change in tempo.
Is there a way to have it actually affect the playing?

When I go to the plugin manager,there is no tempo change plug in.

The plugin must be downloaded from:
https://musescore.org/en/project/tempochanges
look for "Download and Install" towards bottom of the page.

Instead of the plugin, add the tempo markings manually following the instructions here:
