Ordering of dynamics and pedals

• Mar 22, 2022 - 21:34

Is there any way to put dynamics below pedal markings by default? I often include both dynamics and pedals at the same time on vibraphone parts, but the dynamics sit above the pedal markings, which makes the pedaling a lot trickier to read.

I can manually reorder them, but this is a huge pain when dealing with lots of pedals and dynamics. I've checked Tools>Style, but no matter how far down I set the "Position below" under Dynamics or Hairpins, or how far up I set the "Position below" under Pedal, the pedal always stays below the dynamics no matter what. I'm not sure if there's something missing or if this is just how it is.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you

The order in which autoplace adds elements is fixed currently. Eventually it would be nice to make this customizable indeed. Are you writing for only one staff? I guess that's the why the default isn't working - normally pedal markings are used on piano music where the dynamics go between staves.

FWIW, hunting around online for examples, it was hard to find ones that had both dynamics and pedal and were notated on a single staff, but of the ones I did find, half had it one way and half the other.

Meanwhile, maybe we can help you do the manual fix more efficiently. If the pedal is more or less throughout, maybe set the default position of the dynamics to be lower, and turn off autoplace so they don't push the pedal lines down with them. You'd need to resolve some collisions manually if the pedal marks are unusually low to avoid ledger lines, but there are ways of simplifying that process as well. If you attached your score, we may be able to understand and assist better.
