Mac: No Midi I/O PortAudio, No Synthesizer, No Playback

• Apr 8, 2022 - 15:19

Problem: Synthesizer and Mixer are greyed out, playback is greyed out, and external midi doesn't work for entering notes, can't play using internal midi sounds either.

I'm running MacOS 11.6.2 (Big Sur) and MuseScore 3.6.2
From About MuseScore: OS: macOS 10.16, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.6.2.548020600, revision: 3224f34

MuseScore Preferences -> I/O, port audio is selected, but there is nothing in any of the dropdowns.

I've reviewed this article: https://musescore.org/en/node/301796

I have done a musescore factory reset, reinstallation, and deleted the .plist files per these other articles (even the advanced reset), as well as safe mode boot and restart.
https://musescore.org/en/node/96811
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/revert-factory-settings

Starting MuseScore from the command line shows the following:

steve@SMBP16 ~ % /Applications/MuseScore\ 3.app/Contents/MacOS/mscore
dlopen error : dlopen(libjack.0.dylib, 1): image not found
dlopen error : dlopen(/usr/local/lib/libjack.0.dylib, 1): image not found
No device selected. PortAudio detected 3 devices. Will use the default device (index 1).

I have also downloaded the latest PortAudio, compiled and installed:
http://files.portaudio.com/docs/v19-doxydocs/compile_mac_coreaudio.html

Still no PortAudio options.

Internal and External Midi instruments works just fine with Logic Pro, and I see external midi data using Midi Monitor.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm in the same exact situation. I thought it might have been an issue with some of the Native Instruments things I installed recently. So I wiped my system clean of all NI files and it's still messed up. I'm wondering if you've found any solutions. This just started this morning for me out of the blue. MS worked perfectly yesterday and literally nothing has changed on my computer since the last time I successfully used MS and since it started this morning. Baffling.
