Ties.
When scoring, Musescore, after placing the final note of a bar, (usually a quaver), Musescore then automatically creates the same note as the first note of the next bar, and ties it back to the note in the previous bar. I have not requested the first note of the bar, much less a retrospective tie. It's a nuisance. Can this be turned off? What causes it to give a tie where none is wanted?

It only does that if you're trying to enter a note that is longer than the time remaining in the current bar. MuseScore assumes your instruction to place a note of that duration at that position is correct and adjusts the notation of it to make the duration match with the requested duration, which crosses the barline.
You are probably entering a note of a longer duration than will fit in the bar - if you only have room for a quaver and enter a crotchet, MuseScore honours the duration enters a quaver at the end of the first bar and ties it to a quaver at the start of the next bar to give a total duration of 2xquaver = 1xcrotchet.
If I haven't deduced your problem correctly, please upload here a score (.mscz file) that you are having problems with and describe precisely what you are doing - i.e which keyboard presses and/or mouse clicks you are doing - and what happens/what you expect to happen.

Many thanks, jeetee and Steve. That must be it. I thought I had selected the correct length of final note in the bar. Interesting how basic errors creep in when glancing continually between paper and screen.
