System distances

• Apr 29, 2022 - 14:18

Following Format –Style – Page I tried to reduce max distance between systems but no matter what I do, changes are not reflected on the sheet. So it happens that pages look OK but on the last one the systems (staves) are placed across the whole sheet regardless of the number of systems. So, for example,. I have two systems distributed over the whole page. How can I change this?

Indeed, there is a known issue with the setting not working correctly in some cases. Usually the better solution is to not mess with that anyhow but instead simply add a breaks as necessary to have a more even distribution of systems across pages, so the second page isn't so empty. In this case, though, I might be reluctant to do so because that would make the repeat span pages. So this is a case where having a bunch of empty space at the bottom of the second page is probably unavoidable. Best way to accomplish that is to add a spacer below the last systems and size it as desired.

As a hack partial workaround, you could also disable vertical justification in that same dialog. THis allows the max system distance setting to be honored, but at the expense of less good spacing everywhere else through the score. It's always safe to do for scores of a single staff per system (eg, instrumental parts, or lead sheets) and not terribly bad for scores of two staves per system. It gets worse the more staves. So the spacer is usually the better way to go.
