How to make Musescore write music in a Harmonic Minor scale automatically?

• May 7, 2022 - 23:34

Say I want to write in Ab Harmonic minor, with the 3rd and 6th note degree dropped a semitone and the 7th left untouched. My key signature is Cb Major, which is (I'm blanking on the musical term) the "other side" of Ab Minor, but that also flats the G (the 7th note degree that I want untouched). As my piece is not done yet, and not wanting to go back and raise every single Gb as I type it, is there a way to format Musescore so that it inputs G nat. instead of Gb when I type the letter "g" on my computer's keyboard?

I enjoy writing in harmonic minors and it's been a hassle I really wanted to address.

It sounds like maybe you aren't that familiar with how minor key notation work, but to be clear: harmonic minor is virtually always written with ordinary minor key signatures and accidentals. Most musicians have never in their lives seen a key signature for harmonic minor, and would end up making mistakes reading it, because they are accustomed to seeing accidentals on the leading tone. So unless you are writing exclusively for musicians trained in experimental notation (or certain Eastern countries in which this is done more often), best to simply write music using standard Western notation, which requires you to use the accidental any time you want the raised leading tone.
