Possible to set the height of blank lines in a Text object?

• Jul 18, 2022 - 23:42

Many apps MuseScore have a line spacing option per paragraph. And some offer "after paragraph" line spacing control that functions like an HTML margin setting:      < p style="margin-bottom: 12px" >

If an app lacks an "after paragraph" option the common workaround is to add a blank line and set it's font-size and/or line spacing values to achieve the desired affect.

Of course, that raises the question, how does one select the blank line? Simply click in it? Select some slug available for that specific purpose? Selected the line break of the previous line and hope that does the trick, and if so, how is that selected? I don't see a reliable way in MuseScore.

MuseScore offers line spacing control for a full Text object, but no "after paragraph" line spacing control.

Is there a way to set the Font-size for various blank lines in a single Text object? An unpleasant, not easily discoverable, and unreliable workaround in the attached score.

No, there is nothing like that currently, the line spacing built into the font is all there is. The concept of a paragraph doesn't exist in MuseScore. I would kind of guess that might come day along with word wrap and other more word-processing-oriented features.

Trying to select the line break character itself is hit or miss. Best to enter an actual space on that line if using that technique, I find.

But assuming you're dealing with blocks of text in frames, I find it most effective to make each paragraph a separate frame and set the gaps.

Thanks for your reply Marc.

That's been my experience. Hit or miss.

I found that the addition of one or more spaces I didn't provide a magic, reliable bullet. (Didn't pursue rigorously; thought I'd investigate another time.)

I resort to that but generally, where feasible, I prefer to reap the benefits availed by keeping "paragraphs" in a single Text object.

I really look forward to deepened text features in MuseScore. My number one priority would be word wrap.

To be clear, I think clicking in a blank line in a Text object should allow the Font Size control (located in MuseScore's footer text controls) to set the font size of that blank line. If it worked that way we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Do you think that would make a reasonable request that might be easily implemented?

"Gone in MuseScore 4" :-). Seriously, those controls move to the new Properties panel, and aren't different from the Inspector controls. Meanwhile, in current versions, we usually call it the "text toolbar". I prefer to think of it as the "character formatting toolbar" to clarify its function.

For me adding a single space and selecting it works reliably. If you continue to have trouble, can you attach a score that demonstrates the issue?

Selecting just the line break is bound to be tricky in MuseScore due to the way text is implemented, it was never designed to be a word processor and thus handles things internally very differently. If it ever does implement word processor features, that might become a reasonable thing to try, but also, hopefully there will be actual paragraph spacing settings rendering it moot. Anyhow, the point being, I wouldn't waste time trying to trick MuseScore into selecting the line feed, it just doesn't work that way internally.

Not here. The selection is not easily accomplished, and there's no visual feedback when it occurs.

Well, I can't imbed an interaction to my attached score.

But I can say that selecting one or more spaces is challenging.

• Drag select is unreliable and, as mentioned, even when successful it shows no feedback.
• Double clicking doesn't seem to work at all.
• Click and shift Arrow doesn't work.

What are your reliable methods.

I think this is all pretty wonky. I'll post a request for:

Within a Text object, clicking on empty line should allow user to to set the Font-Size for that line via Text Toolbar.
