MS4 doesn't allow notes input via midi; it recognizes keyring, but in preferences says: midi remote control: status inactive ??

MuseScore 4 does support MIDI input, but it could be you have not selected your device in Edit / Preferences / I/O, or there might be a compatibility issue with your specific device driver.

Now it started to work, but new (MS4) sounds aren’t responding well to midi keyboard – sound quickly fades off and it often ‘crackles’ - even if I enlarge buffer size -, comparing to MS basic sounds, which have done work quite well. I believe it is problem in new sounds, not elsewhere, although it’s pity, because comparing to old strings new are so much better and sound realistically.

The new sounds ask a lot more of CPU power, so probably yours is being maxed out; which would explain the crackling etc.

You could simply opt to use MS Basic during the majority of your note input, then switch to MuseSounds when working on audio tweaks and exports afterwards.

Yes, it's known that the sound when inputting notes isn't ideal. But the notes should input correctly even if the sound is a little off sometimes. If you're trying to use Muse Sounds for actual real-time performance, that's definitely not going to be feasible any time soon, as the entire architecture of MsueScore is just not designed for that.
