Adding notes on the same beat, drumkit

When adding notes with the drumkit you can add different hits to the same note if you either select a different voice when adding them or by holding shift when you use a note hotkey. For various reasons to do with how it prints rests I want all of my hits to be with the same voice and so so far I have only been using the shift-hotkey method, but it is strange to me that shift clicking with the note selected doesn't achieve the same thing, because at the moment I am having to change the hotkeys on the fly so as to allow for shift-hotkeying each drum.
Is there any way of adding a drum hit to the same beat as a previous hit with a click that doesn't involve them being on separate voices?
