Missing workflow, functionality and tasks in MS4

• Dec 22, 2022 - 08:24

The UI is all glitzy but doesn't take into account common WORKFLOWS and TASKS used by many musicians many of which have been removed e.g.:
1 - MULTI-DOCUMENT window with TABS to zap between scores
2 - FILE RIBBON with common file operations (Save, Send, Print, Share, Publish, Webpage,..)
This is standard in many applications
3 - TEXT TOOLBAR line at the BOTTOM of the window to rapidly make text changes (Font, Bold, etc) without needing to open the cumbersome properties window
4 - Immediate IN SITU options by using a CONTEXT MENU (right button click) on many objects for basic changes to that object (eg chord volume and length, note tweaks like note size, showing toolbars available), ...)
5 - On the Properties page display the NAME of the object/s being edited

Besides these there are many features which could be very helpful:
(a) - Window SLIDER BOX to split ta score and show 2 sections of a score simultaneously to compare different parts of a score. In long scores comparing different pages is a pain
(b) - DISPLAYING 2 scores SIDE-BY-SIDE to compare versions
(c) - COMPARE scores options report to see differences between scores
(d) - Copy, Paste and Delete for whole pages
(e) - A CONTENTS page with links into the position in the score (The Find option is limited but should include finding page by number, text titles, section titles,... which would also be available in the text)
(f) - A SEARCH button
(g) - A LINK option in texts, eg to youTube performances of a score
(h) - Customised toolbars and the editing of toolbars (adding/removing icons)

There have been many discussions about the multiple windows versus tabs. Most OS's do provide a simple way to select between open windows - either by clicking a taskbar icon, por pressing Alt+Tab, or both. The availability of Alt+Tab to quickly switch back and forth between windows is one of the great advantages of the new system.

You shouldn't need to open Properties, it should already be open normally. It's definitely an workflow advantage having the text settings in one place instead of some of them at the bottom (where most people never noticed them) and some in the Inspector (where other never noticed them).

Not sure what you mean about context menus, these still exist. But playback settings were never part of that.
The properties panel can now operate on multiple elements of different types at once, which is one reason it doesn't display a name. but if you have only a single element element, it's type is displayed in the status bar still.

YZou can definitely copy/paste/delete whole pages, so not sure what you mean by that? Also, toolbars are customizable, more easily so now in MuseScore 4 (see the gear icons). What you are calling the "contents" page is basically the existing Timeline, except it doesn't include section titles. That would be a nice enhancement indeed, I recommend submitting that to GitHub for future consideration.

Not sure what you mean by a search button. There is Ctrl+F to search the score, also the palette search. Do you maybe mean, a command search? This is becoming a common request lately, so it's something I expect to see someday indeed.
