Saving old files on musescore 4

• Dec 24, 2022 - 13:25

If I load up a file originally on musescore 2, let's say, and then I save over or save as a new file from musescore 4, the file should reflect that, and then automatically open with musescore 4. Maybe I am missing something and there is a way to correct this, but since all musescore files save as .mscx there ought to be a way so save such that the next time I open THAT PARTICULAR file, it opens with the only version it's compatible with.

Do you mean, you wish your favorite file browser to provide a way to associate individual files with individual apps even for the some file extension? I don't think any of the widely available file browsers supports such a feature, but by all means, feel free to suggest it to the company that produces your file browser.

I could be incorrect, but it is my understanding that apps can communicate with your local system, including your file browser when they make updates to files on said local system. This would allow (perhaps with user authorization first) to make the file come up under the updated version of the app.... especially considering .mscx files are specific to musescore. That being said, my knowledge in this area is quite limited and I could be very off base.

File browsers almost invariably work based on the file extension - there is no other commonly-used standard for how to associate different files with different applications. If you believe your own favorite file browser provides additional methods of creating file associations, then by all means, consult that browser's documentation to learn more about how that feature works. But it's not something that is generally possible in most file browsers,a nd definitely not something for which any sort of standard exists that MuseScore could take advantage of in any way.
