Open a 3.6 mscz file with customized fields. The customized fields will be outside the header, see attached screen shots. I tested with Macro variables $M and $:workNumber:.
Saving the file as 4.0 and re-opening doesn't help. Footer seems to work file.
After my opinion this is a bug, not a changed feature.
