There are many factors that affect the distances between staves; for example, how many systems on your page, the pitch of the notes and the number of ledger lines involved, the presence of dynamics, articulations, slurs and text items, and format settings. And then there is personal taste, how much is too much?
Please attach a copy of the score (.mscz file) you are having problems with and explain what you are trying to achieve.
