I have the same issue.
Sometimes making some random changes in System > Sound > Volume Mixer allows the program to start.
Sometimes I makes the chnages, the program will not start immediately but then after about 5 minutes it will start.
(I have one speaker and no mic; I think when you have a mic the issues don't appear so often)

I think the issue occurs more often if you don't have any sound input.
