3.6 does not see audio interface, but 4.02 does

Like many, I was frustrated with all the bugs in V4.0 and went back to using 3.6. Yesterday when I opened a song file I could not play back. The mixer and synth are grayed out in the "View" menu. On the I/O page in preferences no interface is shown, where it used to show my interface just fine.
I opened a song file in 4.02 and there were no issues, it recognized the interface and played back just fine.

I am running a PC with Windows 11 - my interface is a Focusrite 18i8 - I has worked with 3.6 with no issues for the past year, until yesterday. The only change I know of is that my machine did an automatic Windows update the night before. My other software packages are using hte interface with no issue, it is only the MS 3.6 that has a problem.

I really don't want to use V4 until more of the bugs have been work out. Any tips would be appreciated.
